Why Link Building Is Critical To An Online Business
Link building is vital for the success of your online business.
Why?
Because the more links you have, the higher Google values your content and site.
Think about it this way, if you had two identical pages on two different websites, one had no link, and one had a hundred links, which one do you think Google would value more..?
That’s right, the one with the backlinks!
This is because Google sees backlinks as “votes” for your content.
But here is the thing:
Just because you have many links doesn’t mean Google is automatically going to put you in the number one position.
There used to be a time when you could have a ton of low-quality links that ranked your pages, but not anymore. Now, they are judging the quality of the links over the quantity.
What does that mean for you?
This means that you can’t place spammy links on forums to get ranked anymore. Backlink quality is more important than ever!
Now you need to think about the site’s authority and the relevance of the link.
Ideally, you should be looking for a domain ranking 60 or higher that is also relevant to your website.
So, if your website is about shoes, don’t try to place your link on a website dedicated to cars; it won’t help you rank.
Get it?
Great, because now it’s time to see the strategies you can use to build your links.
Link Building Strategies Any Site Owner Can Do
Link building is a ranking strategy that has been around since the dawn of SEO- which is good news for your business.
Due to being around for so long, there are a huge amount of strategies you can use to help grow your online business.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the most effective strategies:
Guest Post Link Building
This is undoubtedly one of the most popular link building strategies, and for a good reason: guest posting is an effective technique- when done the right way.
I said, “when done the right way” because Google has given many warming about using guest posts to rank a site.
But the thing is:
If you follow my advice and give the Google algorithm what it wants, you are at little risk.
Indeed, guest posting does an amazing job at feeding Google metrics, which is exactly what you need to do if you want to rank high.
But there is more…
Guest posting can also help you reach more people and build a larger target audience which is great if you’re looking to grow your business.
But here is the catch:
Guest posting has changed since its early days. Just a few years ago, guest posting didn’t require much effort and/or money. But this is no longer the case.
Now, it requires skills to write a unique, high-quality piece of content and money to pay for publishing fees. So, make sure your link is worth it before spending any money.
How does it work?
The first thing you have to do is select your target websites.
To do so, you can use Ahrefs to uncover your competitor backlinks. Then, you can make a list of any referring sites your competitors have but you don’t.
Don’t forget to check their Domain Ranking (DR) to ensure they are worth your investment.
Once you’ve got your list, the next step is to contact the site/blog.
They usually receive a lot of requests, so make sure that your pitch is good and personalised. It’s your first impression, and you need to stand out from the crowd if you want to get published.
Once you agreed with the website, it’s time to write your content.
To do so, you have two options:
- You can write it yourself
- You can hire a professional writer
It doesn’t matter; both alternatives are fine. What matters, though, is to keep in mind their audience.
Don’t forget to include your link – which is why you’re creating this piece of content in the first place. Your link can be attached to:
- Videos
- Images
- Quotes
Once your content is ready, you can submit it and get it published with your naturally placed link.
Testimonial Link Building
Leveraging testimonials is the easiest/quickest way to build links. It’s so easy that some people think this strategy is ineffective, which is not true.
You can build powerful homepage backlinks in just a few minutes with this strategy.
How does it work?
Well, it’s pretty simple:
All you have to do is reach out and offer positive testimonials for services/products that you’re using or that you’ve used in the past.
If your testimonial is up to scratch, it will get published with a shiny link back to your site.
Just a little tip: use numbers in your testimonial. People love numbers; it helps illustrate your point and gives substance to your testimonial.
HARO: Help A Reporter Out
This strategy is not as popular as the two others above but yet offer the same benefits.
And the best thing about it: it’s 100% free to do.
What makes this strategy different from the other listed techniques is that you don’t have to look for websites to place your links; the websites come to you.
So, how does it work?
Well, the first thing you have to do is to sign up on HARO’s website. As I said before, it’s a free service so you won’t be charged anything.
Once that is done, you’ll receive daily emails with question lists broken down into categories.
You need to go through each list to spot questions that are related to your industry.
Those questions will come from websites that can be as big as The New York Times, ABC or even Fox News– so don’t forget to check their DR before contacting them.
The DR will give you a good indication of whether or not it’s going to be “challenging” to get the link. The higher is the DR, the harder it is to win the link.
Why?
Well, because they received more requests. It’s as simple as that.
So, once you have selected the questions/websites, you need to prepare your answers carefully.
To do so, make sure you’ve covered/answered the questions in detail and that you’ve included your website’s bio as well as a link to your relevant page.
Then, all you have to do is sent your work and wait for the journalists to get back to you and tell you whether or not they are going to use your content.
Broken Link Building
The internet is filled with broken links. It’s a huge pain for website owners but a gold mine of opportunities for you.
Indeed, pretty much every website in your niche has some broken links issues waiting to be fixed… with your content.
Sounds great, isn’t it?
Now, let’s see how it works:
The first thing you have to do is find those broken (or dead) links.
How do you recognize a broken link?
Well, a broken link usually leads to an error page- which means that the content that was supposed to be here is no longer available.
This can happen when the page has moved or when the content has been deleted.
So, once you have your list of broken links, all you have to do is contact the websites where those broken links are and offer them to fix their link by linking to your content instead.
It’s a win-win situation. The website owners are happy because they fix one of their dead links, and you’re happy because you win new relevant links.
BONUS TIP: Internal Link Building
Internal link building is probably one of the most underutilized link building strategies you can find but one of the most powerful.
If you’re wondering what are the secrets of major ecommerce stores to get ranked so high and generate a crazy amount of traffic, internal link building is one of these secrets.
So what is internal linking about?
Well, internal linking is the process of linking a page to another related page within the same website.
For example, if you’re writing a post about “What are the benefits of drinking tea?” you want to link your post to your tea sale page.
Make sense, isn’t it?
This strategy is used by the king of ecommerce itself: Amazon.
This is the perfect example to show you how you can use internal linking to boost your sales ad revenue.
Trust me, if Amazon uses it, that means that it’s worth it.
So, are you ready to build your own links?
If not, don’t worry; you can use a link building service to help you out.
Wrapping Up
So, there you have it, some valuable link building strategies you need to get started.
If you follow my advice, you’ll be able to build high-quality links that move the needle- with very little risk of getting penalised by Google.
